Running along the canal

Julia and xc team went north from caderock and I ran south toward DC. Although a city girl at heart, it was a treat to run on a path with lots of shade and very few people. Loved it!

Party over at 6am

On today's run through Georgetown, I saw a college party breaking up on N Street. The first few women seemed odd--tight, short dresses and carrying their shoes--but when I turned onto N Street, it all made sense. There were several gentlemen hanging out on the stoop of a rowhouse, along with a big group of hipsters on the sidewalk. It appears that the college students are all back, moved in, and ready for the fall semester to start.

"Normal" hypothyroidism test results

Given all that has been going on, it was surprising to get near normal results from my endocrinologist.

8/14/2012

TSH: 0.49
Free T4: 1.09
T3, Free: 2.2

Yay!

Topless in front of the White House

Seriously... 6:30am and I had to look twice to be sure... but really, that was too much and too early for my eyes to see. I did not attempt to take any picture and I don't know why the secret service people were not doing anything about the woman (white skirt, bright pink sneakers, no top).

The only thing I can figure is that this woman was leftover from go topless day:

Perfect, low 70s run this morning.

Goitrogenic Foods

Some of my favorite vegetables are goitrogens (foods that promote goiter formation via blocking the production/conversion of thyroid hormones T4 and T3). Raw goitrogens in large quantities can be particularly damaging.

  • broccoli
  • brussels sprouts
  • cabbage
  • canola
  • cauliflower
  • collard/kale/mustard greens
  • kohlrabi
  • pine nuts
  • peanuts
  • pears
  • peaches
  • soy
  • spinach
  • strawberries
  • sweet potatoes
  • turnips

Running with hypothyroidism

Sorry for the extended hiatus. A lot has happened--some great, some horrendous. The worst event was the death of my father on my birthday.  :( The not so good was being diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The great events have been family trips and precious time spent with those I love.

Regarding my dad, I miss him terribly. He meant the world to me.

I have read up about hypothyroidism--everything I can get my hands on. I find the personal stories the most helpful. Everyone is different in their journey with this disease, but when you are able to connect with someone going through the same symptoms or feelings, it is nice to know what worked and what didn't work for them. I'm hoping that in sharing my story, I can help someone, somewhere along the way.

I ran 10 miles on the treadmill this morning. It is currently raining and 73 degrees.
