Crew Teams on the Potomac River

A sure sign that spring is just around the corner...crew teams are practicing on the water. Although the temperature was advertised at 48 degrees, it felt more like 38 with the wind.

Glen Echo Run!

Glen Echo,MD, is so quaint. I may have crossed into Cabin John, as well. Check out the one-lane bridge! The weather was perfect--50 degrees--for a short, three-mile run.

Long Periods of Sitting Increases Health Risks

A study by Kansas State University reveals that the longer you sit, the higher your risks for chronic diseases. A sample of 63,048 Australian men, aged 45-65, participated in the study. "The prevalence of chronic diseases climbed up as the number of hours the participants spent sat down increased. Those who sat for more than six hours a day were at a particularly high risk of diabetes."

One caveat the researchers pointed out: They were not positive if the amount of sitting caused chronic disease, or if those with chronic diseases were more likely to sit for longer periods.

Middle of M Street

Yay, the sun eventually came out. However, it was still 38 degrees and very windy for the run home.

Pennsylvania Ave Sunrise

These pictures were taken this morning, looking up Pennsylvania Avenue. It was a nice change from the usual pitch black run. Although the days are getting longer, leaving for work a half-hour later is what really did the trick.

Walking in Lower Manhattan

Google Maps and FB zapped my iPhone battery. I got a couple of pics, for future college visits.

M&M Motivation

Could not skip my afternoon run after indulging in two yummy flavors of M&Ms--coconut and mint. The coconut tasted quite artificial upon first bite...but after 10 or so, it completely grew on me. The mint had a strong mint aftertaste, a nice punch.

New York City!

I am in New York City all week--staying right in Times Square. I'm too chicken to run outside; but I will say that the Marriott Marquis has a gorgeous gym with plenty of equipment. The picture below was taken from a rooftop building on Madison Avenue.

Gym-Pact Allows Home/Office Workouts

Yay! My life has just gotten a whole lot simpler...and just in time. You can now record a home/office workout by wearing your iPhone to capture the motion. You have to track at least 30 minutes of activity (above a very low threshold) and you have 90 minutes to complete the "active 30 minutes." This is a piece of cake--which is even sweeter, since Washington is going to get a dusting of snow today and tomorrow.

Thanks, Gym-Pact!
